EBMUD may pay $1-$2 per sq ft for lawn conversion.
EBMUD's lawn conversion rebate can support water-wise garden projects in its service area. The important launch sequence is familiar: verify eligibility, apply, wait for approval, then begin work.
Planning facts
Rates and caps to verify before applying.

- Super rebate path: $2 per sq ft when additional ecological practices are met.
- Single-family and small multifamily cap: $2,000 within a 2-year period.
- Commercial, municipal, and large multifamily cap: $15,000 within a 2-year period.
- Project must not start until EBMUD provides notice of approval.
Checked against official EBMUD public pages in August 2026. EBMUD controls eligibility, funding, approval, deadlines, and final payment.

Super rebate clue
The $2 path is more than just removing grass.
EBMUD describes extra practices such as sheet mulching, compost, majority California native plants, and cool-season planting. Build those choices into the plan before buying materials.
Readiness checks
Do these before the project becomes hard to change.
- Confirm the property receives potable EBMUD water.
- Make sure the lawn has been irrigated and actively maintained.
- Take clear current photos before work starts.
- Choose low-water-use plants and document the plant list.
- Plan sprinkler removal, hand watering, or drip conversion.
- Budget enough time for the 9-month completion deadline after approval.
